Scopus Sets the Standard in Unbiased and Comprehensive Research Coverage

New Content Selection Committee Meets October 4th in Budapest

Amsterdam, October 4 2005

Scopus®, the world’s largest abstract and citation database of research information, today announced that it has a assembled a Content Selection Committee that will be responsible for taking the scientific information “wish list” from users and prioritizing the addition of new content. The committee will meet on October 4th, in Budapest, Hungary for three days to build the framework for identifying content for inclusion in Scopus.

The Content Selection Committee is comprised of 20 of the world’s foremost scientists and professors and 10 subject librarians. Committee members come from all scientific fields and from all over the world – thereby ensuring that Scopus’ content is representative of the needs of the broad range of researchers and librarians that Scopus serves. Their collective expertise spanning many fields will help direct Scopus to resources that are both important and relevant to their respective communities for ultimate inclusion in Scopus. The goal will be to ensure that Scopus continues to remain the most comprehensive, unbiased and broad-based resource of scientific, technological, medical and social science research.

The launch of the content selection committee represents the first time an abstracting & indexing (A&I) database has created an independent external committee to guide content selection and future direction. As a result, Scopus is ensuring that its content coverage is completely unbiased and based purely on the needs of researchers and librarians themselves.

“Judging the quality and relevancy of scientific research is a complicated task that can be best accomplished by researchers, area specialists and librarians. I appreciate Scopus’ decision to leverage independent expertise across a broad range of disciplines to ensure that the most relevant and important information is easily accessible,” said Professor Peter Stambrook, Chairman of the University of Cincinnati Medical Center’s Department of Cell Biology, Neurobiology and Anatomy.

Scopus will look to the committee to handle the following responsibilities:

“There are now more scientific findings published than ever before,” said Jaco Zijlstra, Scopus Director. “The only way to effectively incorporate new research is to listen to the scientific community and give them the control to decide which content is most significant and important to include. We’re excited that some of the most respected members of the community have agreed accept a seat on the committee and give us their guidance, feedback and support.”
