Major Corporations Choose Scopus to Drive R&D Business
Amsterdam, January 13, 2005
Henkel and Boehringer Ingelheim, two of the world's leading companies
are among the first corporations to invest in Scopus, the world's
largest Abstract and Indexing (A&I) database from Elsevier. Both companies
are recognised internationally for their strengths in research and development
(R&D), which is a key part of their business model. Their decision
to choose Scopus as a multi-disciplinary tool that delivers their scientists
better search results is a strong endorsement for Scopus' time-saving
efficiency. Easier, faster searching with better results helps streamline
the research process and ultimately impacts on the bottom line.
Boehringer Ingelheim spends more than one fifth of net sales in its largest business segment, Prescription Medicines, on research and development.1 Dr. Oliver Renn, Head of the Scientific Library, Department of Quality & Records Management said that "the commercial sector is highly competitive and it is important for us to have the best when it comes to research resources. We believe that access to Scopus will increase the quality and productivity of our R&D output, so that our customers get the best possible products from our company."
Jaco Zijlstra, Director of Scopus, said "In the commercial environment, the timing of scientific breakthroughs impacts on the value of the business. Our corporate clients recognise that Scopus potentially speeds up part of the research process by delivering quality results in less time."
Dr. Christoph Haxel, Director of Henkel Corporate Scientific Services, said "Scopus gives our scientists access to the right information in a timely fashion and frees them up so that they can concentrate on their research. Scopus offers our global research and development teams the first search tool that combines searches of subscription based literature and information on the Internet in an efficient and economical way. We believe Scopus will make a positive contribution to the development of Henkel's innovative brands and technologies."
Scopus has won high-profile customers in the corporate and academic sector since its launch eight weeks ago and is being adopted at a very high pace. Leading corporate and academic institutions in North America, Latin America, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Middle East have signed deals. Henkel and Boehringer Ingelheim have joined the growing list of quality-driven organisations who believe Scopus will positively impact on their research.
Scopus was created with the end-user in mind. It is the result of over two years of collaboration with librarians and researchers across the globe. They had a clear vision of what Scopus should be and what it had to deliver to the scientific community in terms of quality, depth and scope of information. To date over 50 organisations and institutions have subscribed to Scopus and the user community exceeds 600,000. Corporate and academic scientific researchers will reap the benefits of the time they can now save in the research process with Scopus.
"We believe that Scopus is an invaluable investment for our company," added Christoph Haxel, "when you analyse the cost versus the man-hours saved by removing irrelevant information and dead internet links, Scopus is right on target. It gets our scientists where they need to go and quality is guaranteed."
