Scopus® Celebrates 50th Customer!
Andalucia Consortium (CBUA) Brings Scopus Licenses Through the 50 Mark
Amsterdam, December 23, 2004
The Andalucia Consortium (CBUA - Consorcio de Bibliotecas Universitarias de Andalucia), which consists of nine Universities in Spain, has invested in Scopus, the worlds largest Abstract and Indexing (A&I) database from Elsevier. This brings the total number of licenses through the 50 mark since Scopus's launch on the market in mid-November. Scopus was chosen by these institutions because it gives their scientists a multi-disciplinary tool that guarantees better search results.
Miguel Duarte, Technical Director of CBUA and Library Director at the University of Cadiz, said, "We may be the 50th customer for Scopus, but it is our users who are the winners in this deal. We believe that access to Scopus will significantly enhance the quality of research output from our universities. It shows that CBUA is leading the way in terms of investing in new technologies." This is the first consortium in the world to subscribe to Scopus.
Jaco Zijlstra, Director of Scopus, said that "securing our 50th license within six weeks of the November launch is a major milestone and undoubtedly demonstrates that Scopus is being adopted at a very high pace." Leading academic institutions and corporations in North America, Latin America, Asia, Australia, Europe and the Middle East have signed deals with Scopus, amongst them, prestigious names such as the University of Pittsburgh in the USA, University of Toronto, Canada, Chalmers University in Sweden and the Swiss Federal Institute of Science and Technology. All these have joined the growing list of prominent research institutions putting their trust in Scopus.
Scopus has been created with the end-user in mind and is the result of over two years of collaboration with librarians and researchers across the globe. The team had a clear vision of what Scopus should be and what it must deliver to the scientific community in terms of quality, depth and scope of information. This vision is becoming a reality with positive feedback and rapid take up of Scopus within the scientific community. With over 50 organisations and institutions subscribing to Scopus, the user community is now already in excess of 600,000. These scientific researchers will reap the benefits of the time they can now save in their research thanks to Scopus.
Felix de Moya, Chairman of CBUA and Vice-President, University of Granada said that "Scopus is an access tool with important and much better capabilities than other products on the market. It is an interdisciplinary tool which is essential in today's research."
