First users in Asia Pacific to Benefit from Scopus®
University of Newcastle Ensures Access to New Navigational Tool for Over 20,000 Staff and Students
Tokyo, November 18, 2004At the Scopus launch event held at the Grand Hyatt in Tokyo today, Elsevier announces the University of Newcastle as the first customer to license Scopus in Asia Pacific. Among selected customers and prospects attending the event are the University of Newcastle’s Greg Anderson and Kirston Neilson.
Scopus is a new navigational product from Elsevier, a world-leading publisher of scientific, technical and health information products and services used by leading institutions all over the world.
Scopus is the world's largest abstract and indexing database covering 27 million abstracts and citations from over 14,000 STM and social science journal titles and conference proceedings, from over 4,000 international publishers. Superior navigation through the available scientific literature is enabled by means of new searching and browsing functionality. 85 institutions in Asia Pacific have been trialing Scopus prior to its commercial launch.
The University of Newcastle was among the first institutions to trial Scopus in Australasia when the pre-release version of Scopus became available earlier this year. The University of Newcastle was quick to recognize the unique value of Scopus when the product was used by its user community during the 3-month trial and decided to license Scopus after the trial ended in October 2004.
With this purchase, the University of Newcastle has become the first library in Australia as well as Asia Pacific to subscribe to the new service, giving over 20,000 academic staff and students access to a more extensive range of resources than that available to students at other Australian institutions.
"This launch is a great opportunity to have the University of Newcastle internationally recognized as a leader in the provision of electronic resources for its staff and students. Our long commitment to giving our students access to an intensive range of resources now gives us a chance to be major players in the Australasian region," says Greg Anderson, Director of Library Services, University of Newcastle.
Linda Dunne, Account Manager for Australasia commented, “Scopus was officially introduced to Australasia only in July and the interest has been tremendous with 15 customers actively trialing the product to date. In adopting Scopus before anyone else in the region, the University of Newcastle has, in effect, equipped its staff and students with a superior navigational tool, ensuring better search results”
